A Study of the Misrepresentation of African Americans in the News?

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to show how the media has the power to choose what is broadcast and how it is broadcast. In return, show how it affects the public’s opinion on that demographic and the people apart from underrepresented communities. This study highlighted different cases where black people have been placed in a stereotypical light due to their race. The research highlighted cases where black victims have received little to no media coverage.

This study took place because African Americans are constantly portrayed in the media as stereotypes and not people. The underrepresented group is constantly vilified in the media as well as misrepresented. Media outlets tend to show no sympathy for these groups as well. This research proved the negative effects of these judgments placed on this group of people. This research showed binary oppositions between black and white people and differences in how they are portrayed in the media pertaining to similar cases.
